Captain John Arenstam
USCG (retired), Assistant Director for Seamen’s Church Institute’s Center for Maritime Education
Captain John Arenstam, USCG (retired) is the Assistant Director for Seamen’s Church Institute’s Center for Maritime Education (SCI) in Paducah, KY. Prior to joining SCI, Arenstam served as the safety manager for AEP River Operations. In his 27 years with the Coast Guard, he has sailed along every coast and all five Great Lakes. His assignments included Captain of the icebreaker Penonscot Bay on the Hudson River, and the seagoing Buoy Tender Firebush out of Kodiak, Alaska. Arenstam spent most of his Coast Guard career in waterways management and aids to navigation at offices in Virginia, New Orleans, and Washington D.C., and aboard “black hulls” around the nation. During his time in Washington, he worked for the USCG Director of International Affairs, and gathered considerable worldwide exposure, while conducting analysis and training overseas. Arenstam also served as the Deputy Sector Commander in New Orleans and as the Director Western Rivers for the Eighth Coast Guard District.
